Etiology

The specific etiologic agent of pneumonia cannot be identified in up to 40 to 60 percent of patients. 4,5,6,Z,,8.,9and 1° The predominant pathogens that cause pneumonia in pediatric patients are a function of the patient's age, the presence of underlying disease, the vaccination status, and attendance in day care. Since clustering of cases of pneumonia due to a particular microbe are common, it is helpful to be aware of recent local outbreaks. When an etiologic agent is identified, the best predictor of the agent is age.
