Because the great majority of ingested foreign bodies traverse the entire gastrointestinal tract without any problems, treatment can be expectant once the object has passed through the pylorus.3 If, however, a foreign body obstructs the esophagus, prevention of aspiration is paramount. This can be accomplished by inserting a tube above the obstructing body to remove unswallowed fluids above the impaction. Conditions warranting consultation with an endoscopist and possible hospital admission are listed in Table 72-1.
