Herbal Agents

In 1997 sales of over-the-counter herbal preparations exceeded $1.5 billion in the United States. Between 1994 and 1998, the sales of herbal supplements will have increased about 105 percent. According to the New York Times, July 23, 1998, between 1995 and 1997, the sales of St. John's wort have increased by 1900 percent. 3 Many other home grown and imported herbal preparations add to the total amount of herbal agents ingested, inhaled, and rubbed on. The list is staggering and this review will encompass only some of the more common herbals used. Herbal agents can be classified as generally safe, potentially toxic, and toxic.
