History

The history required to evaluate lacerations to the extremities is the same as that required to evaluate lacerations elsewhere, with two important additions ( Table 40-2). First, because of the mobility of the extremities, the position of the limb at the time of injury may influence the potential for damage to underlying tendons, nerves, blood vessels, and joints. Second, injuries to the dominant hand or limb are potentially more devastating than injuries to the nondominant limb.
