Longitudinal studies of convalescing premature infants have demonstrated that systemic hypertension may develop in as many as 9 percent. 5 The possible causes include thromboembolic renal artery occlusion following umbilical artery catheterization and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. 6 Although the normal range is age dependent, a systolic blood pressure greater than 120 mmHg or a diastolic pressure greater than 75 mmHg warrants consideration of systemic hypertension. 7
