Laboratory Evaluation

Laboratory evaluation of patients with acute ingestions should focus on acid-base status, electrolyte level, and renal function. Electrolyte panel, determination of hepatic profile, complete blood count, coagulation profile, and aspirin and acetaminophen levels should also be sent. Evaluation of drug levels for specific NSAIDs are not indicated. A nomogram for ibuprofen intoxication does exist but is not clinically useful. NSAID levels do not correlate well with observed toxicity or outcomes. 17
