Nettles contain a specialized systi for injecting their toxins. Stinging hairs are connected to a bladder filled with various irritants (histamine, acetylcholine, 5-hydroxytryptamine). Handling of the plant stimulates the injection of these substances via the hair tube. An immediate burning response may last for hours. Ireatment is symptomatic.
