Mercury occurs in both inorganic and organic forms. Inorganic compounds are divided further into elemental mercury and mercurous and mercuric salts. Organic mercurials exist as short- and long-chained alkyl and aryl compounds. The short-chained alkyls, such as methyl mercury and ethyl mercury, are more toxic to humans, with dimethylmercury being lethal in small amounts.22 All forms of mercury are toxic but differ in the routes of absorption, constellations of clinical findings, and responses to therapy.
