The principal goal of this chapter is to familiarize the physician with upper airway control by presenting alternatives to tracheal intubation. Reviewed is a brief anatomic and pathophysiologic description of the upper airway, the (oral, nasal) airway management, bag-valve mask, esophageal airway devices, and noninvasive pressure support ventilation techniques.
