Diagnostic imaging tests for imaging myocardial disease have grown substantially in sophistication. Recent developments include new scintigraphic diagnostic contrast agents in nuclear medicine, Doppler methods in echocardiography, and rapid magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the heart. Since the cost of these diagnostic tests is relatively high, it is essential that the "correct" test be selected. Such a test will lead to the most accurate diagnosis in a short period, with few false positives or negatives. This chapter reviews diagnostic modalities for myocardial imaging, with specific emphasis on basic principles of the techniques. Following this discussion, the use of imaging modalities in an array of cardiovascular disorders is presented.
