The administration and staffing of a neonatal transport program is rarely the responsibility of emergency department personnel, and therefore is not discussed in this chapter. However, programs responsible for transporting older pediatric patients often originate in the emergency department. While a detailed discussion of the conduct of a pediatric transport program is beyond the scope of this book, this section outlines the principles of the organization of a transport program with emphasis on pediatric transport. The focus is on interhospital transport, although many of the principles also apply to prehospital and intrahospital transport.
