Ihe scabetic mite resides in a burrow within the stratum corneum, the most superficial layer of the epidermis. Most individuals have an average of 12 mites at any given time. When the mite burden becomes high, numbering in the millions, a crusted form of scabies develops. Ihis is called Norwegian scabies. It is most commonly seen in association with an immunocompromised state, particularly HIV; mental retardation; dementia; or physical disability. Ihe time from infestation to clinical symptoms is about 3 to 4 weeks.
