Pathophysiology

In the presence of predisposing factors (Ta.bIe 52.-1), clot forms in the deep venous system. Thrombosis usually begins at venous valve sinuses and propagates proximally over minutes to hours. Lysis of the clot generally occurs over 1 to 2 weeks. The risk of embolization is highest in the first week of thrombus formation.
