Pathophysiology

A hemoglobinopathy is an inherited disease resulting from the presence of one or more abnormal hemoglobins. More than 400 hemoglobin variants have been described. Normal human hemoglobin consists of four polypeptide chains and four heme groups. Ihe four polypeptide chains consist of two alpha chains and two nonalpha chains, which are most commonly beta. Ihe majority of hemoglobin in a normal adult consists of two alpha chains and two beta chains and is called hemoglobin A (HbA, a2b2). Other normal nonalpha chains are gamma (hemoglobin F) and delta (hemoglobin A2) (Iab!e..,..2..1..,3::.,1,.).
