HISTORY Ihe most common reason for a transplant recipient to present to the emergency department is fever.14 Certain important historical elements should be collected (IabJ§i96-1). While fever is the most common symptom of infection, it may be masked by steroids, uremia, or hyperglycemia, which suppress baseline body temperature. While fever suggests infection, the absence of fever should never be used to rule out possible infection in a transplant patient.
