Drugs may be transferred to a fetus transplacentally. Infants and children may receive drugs through neglect, abuse, or accident. Drugs may be utilized as a suicide gesture in adolescents. AMS may be caused by exogenous intoxicants, such as ethanol, ethylene glycol, methyl alcohol, paraldehyde, salicylates, anticholinergics, including antihistamines, cholinergics, opiates, tricyclic antidepressants, carbamazepine, clonidine, sedative-hypnotics, amphetamines, cocaine, cannabis, nicotine, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and phenothiazines. Household and beauty products may also cause AMS.
