Predisposing Factors

Lack of developmental maturity of anatomic structures is known to predispose to the formation of hernias, as in indirect inguinal and umbilical hernias in premature infants. Family history, undescended testis, and genitourinary abnormalities are additional risks for inguinal hernia. Conditions that increase intraabdominal pressure—such as ascites, peritoneal dialysis, ventriculoperitoneal shunt, cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and pregnancy—are thought to be associated with hernia.
