While early pregnancy itself has not been associated with an increased risk of stroke, the peripartum and postpartum periods (up to 6 weeks after birth) have been identified as having an increased incidence of both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Potential contributors to this increased risk include the presence of preeclampsia/eclampsia and the decrease in blood volume and alterations in hormonal status following birth. 5 Treatment should be targeted toward the underlying etiology.
