Primary applications are those examinations that are critically time-dependent and/or of such nature that the information gained is likely to be of major benefit to the patient and physician (Table. . . .295-1). These examinations each involve looking for only a few easily recognized findings. The straightforward, limited nature of these examinations allows emergency physicians to perform them with less formal training than the imaging specialist, occasionally under severe time constraints.
