Prognosis

Patients who ingest small amounts and remain asymptomatic through the first 6 h after ingestion generally will recovery fully. Symptomatic patients are at higher risk for morbidity. Coma or shock is indicative of a grave prognosis, with approximately a 10 percent mortality rate. Most patients with shock or coma should survive with appropriate care. Generally, prognosis is improved with early recognition and initiation of treatment. Long-term sequelae include strictures, which may occur in patients with minimal symptoms.
