Secondary Survey

The goal of the secondary survey is to identify all other injuries to a trauma patient. It does not begin until the completion of the primary survey. All body areas are completely examined. Resuscitation priorities are established, and any life-threatening injuries should already have been managed. Any needed x-rays, laboratory studies, or diagnostic procedures in the ED are also performed during this phase.

The presence of family will often be helpful to calm and console frightened and injured children. Additionally, during this phase a complete history should be obtained using the AMPLE format (/Allergies, Medications, Past medical history, time of Last meal, Events leading up to the injury).
