Seizure Classification

Many attempts have been made to provide a clinically useful classification of seizure types, both to facilitate communication among physicians and to provide a basis for treatment decisions. Formerly, seizures were identified using the terms grand mal, petit mal, and psychomotor. The International League Against Epilepsy 2 recommends dividing seizures into two major groups: generalized seizures and partial seizures (Iable,22.4-1). When there is inadequate data to categorize the seizure, the seizure is called unclassified.
