Solanum Species Potato Eggplant Common Nightshade

Solanine is contained in green potatoes and in the sprouts, and is destroyed by cooking. Delayed gastroenteritis may be seen (see common nightshade above). Toxicodendron Species (Poison Ivy, Oak, and Sumac)

Plants contain the antigenic resin, urushiol. Once exposed, most, but not all, individuals develop sensitization as the antigenic resin binds with skin proteins and forms a complete antigen. Reexposure then stimulates a T-cell-mediated immune response. Reactions begin with itching, burning and redness developing over 12 to 48 h, and may progress to include varying degrees of vesiculobullous formation. Resin may riain after the plant has dried and may be aerosolized during burning. Antipruritic and topical therapies (oatmeal baths and topical steroids) are commonly used. Facial, genital or widespread involvient requires systiic steroids for 10 to 14 days. Patients should be advised to clean under their fingernails and wash all contaminated clothing. IvyBlock, a new product recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration, contains bentoquatam and binds urushiol to prevent absorption. Skin cleansers (such as Tecnu, Oak-N-Ivy Brand) may be used after the rash has begun to develop, up to 8 h after exposure, to decontaminate the skin. (See Chap 239 for further discussion.)
