Spiral Computed Tomography

The biggest technological advance came with the advent of spiral or helical scanning. Rather than scanning with the traditional axial method where the slices lie parallel to one another, spiral scanning obtains data continually in a spiral fashion. There is a continually rotating x-ray gantry and continuous table movement. This was achieved by a critical advance in hardware technology with the introduction of slip-ring interfaces in gantry construction, allowing for continuous rotation of the source detector assembly.3 With conventional CT, a patient is required to hold his or her breath for each additional slice. When a patient breathes to varying depths with each slice, lesions as large as 1 cm can be missed as a result of slice misregistration (Fig.. , . . 296-4). In a typical spiral scanner, 60 images can be acquired in 1 min, therefore there is less breath holding, which decreases slice misregistration.
