Subchorionic Hematoma

An intrauterine hematoma is present in about one-fourth of those with threatened abortion. In the first trimester, blood may accumulate in the endometrial cavity between the chorionic membranes and the uterine wall; this is known as a subchorionic hematoma or implantation bleed ( Fig 1.09-15 and Fig ,1.09-16). The presence of a subchorionic hematoma may more than double the chances of pregnancy loss in threatened abortion. The size and location are important factors in judging the significance of such bleeding. Small hematomas under the placenta are more important than larger hematomas elsewhere.
