Sublingual Nitroglycerin

INDICATIONS It is the agent of choice for unstable angina, for immediate treatment of pain in acute myocardial infarction, and for the treatment of left ventricular insufficiency and pulmonary edema.20

USE Nitroglycerin is absorbed very quickly through the oral mucosa. It is given as a 0.3- to 0.6-mg tablet or spray under the tongue. The onset of hypotensive effect is in 5 min and can last several hours.

SIDE EFFECTS AND CONTRAINDICATIONS The most common side effects include headache, tachycardia, nausea, vomiting, hypoxia, and hypotension. It should be used with caution in patients with aortic stenosis.
