TABLE 1217 Classification of Status Seizures

About 5 to 10 percent of children with epilepsy and 60,000 to 100,000 total epileptics experience one bout of status grand mal (SGM). This condition is a neurologic emergency that could be fatal. The longer the SGM persists, the greater the morbidity and the mortality rates and the more difficult it is to control the seizures. In

patients with no neurologic sequelae, the mean duration of SGM is 1 2 h. Neurologic sequelae result when SGM lasts an average of 10 h. The mean duration of SGM in patients who die is 13 h.
