Vitrectomy may be necessary to preserve vision in cases of severe proliferative retinopathy with vision loss secondary to retinal hemorrhage and detachment or vitreous hemorrhage.19 Experimental trials involving aldose reductase inhibitors and aminoguanidine in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy are ongoing.
