TABLE 21210 Classification of von Willebrands Disease

Von Willebrand disease can be difficult to distinguish from mild hemophilia A. The bleeding time should be normal in hemophilia, although it is also often normal in patients with vWD. The von Willebrand antigen and activity should be normal or elevated in patients with hemophilia. The factor VIII activity level will be low in patients with hemophilia and may be normal or slightly low in patients with vWD. In some cases, it is nearly impossible to distinguish type I vWD and mild hemophilia A.
