TABLE 834 Ranson Criteria for Predicting Mortality Risk from Acute Pancreatitis

There is no specific serum marker predictive of outcome in acute pancreatitis, although cytokines show great promise. 4 The absolute level of serum amylase or lipase does not correlate with severity.37

A CT scan, particularly if contrast enhanced, may provide valuable estimates of the severity and prognosis in cases of moderate to severe acute pancreatitis. 13 A CT severity index score has been described. It is suggested that CT scan be performed on patients with three or more Ranson's criteria, significantly ill patients, and patients with clinical deterioration.16

Complications include phlegmons, abscesses, or pseudocysts,16 usually in the first 2 to 3 weeks after the onset of pancreatitis. Systemic complications include pulmonary, cardiovascular, renal, hematologic, central nervous system, and metabolic abnormalities (Table.., .83-5.).14
