The Elderly

The fastest growing population in the United States are those aged 85 and over. The Census Bureau estimates a doubling in the size of this group from its current 3.6 million by the year 2025 and a fivefold increase to 18.2 million by 2050. There is no limitation on the basis of age on the use of intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) in patients meeting treatment criteria. In elderly patients with ICH, particular consideration should be given to amyloid angiopathy as a pathologic cause due to its increased incidence in the elderly.
