The Neurologic Examination In The Emergency Setting

Hubert S. Mickel

Assessment „of theNeurologic Examination Overview

Sensory Examination

The emergency neurologic assessment is focused on obtaining the information that is needed to make rapid management decisions, establish the priorities in examination and management, and assist in making a decision regarding intervention, further examination, and disposition. Stated simplistically, the emergency physician's responsibility, once any immediate threat to life has been addressed, is primarily to determine that a neurologic problem potentially exists and that the critical conditions associated with that problem are identified or excluded; the neurologist or neurosurgeon often subsequently determines what the problem is. This chapter describes the elements of the basic neurologic examination appropriate to the emergency department.
