Treatment

Initial treatment includes the use of topical corticosteroids, tar preparations, and lubrication. A tar solution containing 1 teaspoon of a tar emulsion such as Balnetar or Zetar in a quart of water, should be used to soak the palms and soles for 15 to 20 minutes twice a day. Application of a high- or ultra high-potency topical corticosteroid such as fluocinonide (Lidex) or clobetasol propionate 0.05% (Temovate) or betamethasone dipropionate (Diprolene) 0.05% ointment follows this soak. Liberal use of emollients such as Vaseline petroleum jelly, Aquaphor healing ointment, or Eucerin cream should be encouraged.
