Patients with potentially life-threatening infections (e.g., cerebral malaria, pneumocystic pneumonia, amebic meningoencephalitis, or CNS toxoplasmosis) should be started on antiparasitic treatment immediately in the emergency department (Table 143-3). Patients who are dehydrated from gastrointestinal losses or fever should receive intravenous hydration. Those who can take fluids orally can be rehydrated by mouth.
