Treatment

Antiviral medications are helpful if given within the first 72 h after the eruption begins. Antiviral therapy can shorten the time to healing, decrease new lesion formation, and possibly decrease the pain and duration of postherpetic neuralgia. Acyclovir (800 mg po five times per day for 7 days), famciclovir (500 mg po tid for 7 days), and valacyclovir (1 g po tid for seven days) are recommended outpatient regimens.

Symptomatic treatment includes Domeboro's solution compresses 1:40 dilution for 15 min qid followed by Polysporin ointment or Silvadene cream. Analgesics are often necessary as well.
