WBGT 07 Th 02 T 01 T

üb where Twb is the wet-bulb temperature of ambient air measured in the shade, Tbg is black-globe temperature, and Tdb is dry-bulb temperature. A WBGT greater than 33°C (91.4°F) has been shown to increase the incidence of heat injury and heatstroke significantly. The wet-bulb temperature is the most significant variable in the WBGT equation, emphasizing the importance of humidity in heat injury.

Another measurement of heat stress that is commonly reported in the weather segment of television newscasts is the heat index, which is determined by a complicated formula developed by the National Weather Service using the air temperature and relative humidity ( IabJ.e,iii187:1). The heat index, often referred to as "apparent temperature," is a measurement of how hot it actually feels when relative humidity is combined with the effects of air temperature. The heat index is calculated for shady, light-wind conditions. If there is exposure to direct sunlight, the heat index should be adjusted by adding 15°F. 6 The National Weather Service has reported that increasingly severe heat illnesses are seen with prolonged exposure or activity when the heat index is 105°F or greater. For this reason, the National Weather Service has identified specific procedures that will be followed when the heat index is expected to exceed 105° to 110°F for at least 2 consecutive days in a geographic region:
