Advantages

The advantages of the temporalis flap include its proximity to common defects of the a head and neck. It is technically easy to harvest and has a robust blood supply. The muscle and fascia are easily draped over defects with little tendency to retract toward the donor site. The nature of the blood supply allows longitudinal splitting of the muscle into segments supplied by the posterior and anterior branches of the deep temporal artery. This allows independent reconstruction of independently function- o ing units (e.g., floor of mouth and tongue or lip and eye). The function of the mand- ยง

ible after harvest of this mandible is essentially unchanged.
