How Is Pgd Performed

PGD is done in conjunction with IVF. Normally during the IVF cycle, the eggs are retrieved from your ovaries and fertilized with your partner's sperm. If PGD is performed, the lab embryologist observes the embryo until it reaches the six- to eight-cell stage. At that time, one or two cells are removed and biopsied. The removal of one or two cells does not damage the embryo's development.

The biopsied cells are tested using sophisticated techniques to determine which embryos contain genetic defects. The cells from the embryo are also analyzed to ensure that they have the proper number of chromosomes. Any embryos found to be genetically defective or to have an abnormal number of chromosomes are discarded. Healthy and genetically normal embryos are allowed to further develop and will eventually be transferred back to your uterus as a normal step in the IVF process.
