Your doctor will draw your blood and check your prolactin level before you begin treatment with Parlodel. If your prolactin level is elevated, you will probably undergo a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of your head. The purpose of that radiological study is to evaluate your brain's pituitary gland. Once you begin Parlodel, your doctor will order blood work to evaluate your response to the medication.
When you are going to have your blood prolactin level checked, remember these few important points:
• This test is usually performed in the morning, when a raised prolactin level is most apparent.
• This test should not be done for at least one day following a breast examination or sexual activity because these activities may increase your prolactin levels and result in a false positive reading. Ask your doctor for specific timeframe guidelines.
