Illicit Drug

A medical research study conducted in 2003 showed that regular smoking of marijuana can have detrimental effects on male fertility. It was shown that marijuana is linked to lowered sperm count and poor sperm motility. In addition, the sperm that are able to enter the vagina tend to be slowed and weakened, making it almost impossible for them to penetrate the egg's outer shell for fertilization to occur. It is generally accepted by medical experts that heavy marijuana or cocaine use may temporarily reduce the number and quality of sperm by as much as 50 percent. Other street drugs, including heroin and ecstasy, have also been shown to dramatically diminish male fertility. Men who use these drugs may suffer from reduced sex drive, abnormally shaped sperm, and low sperm count.
