Because this promising technology is still under FDA investigation, prospective patients must meet certain guidelines and qualifications before they can participate in the program. The basic qualifications for enrollment in the MicroSort clinical trial are discussed next.

For Genetic Disease

New patients who wish to participate in the program for the purpose of reducing the probability of transmitting a genetic disease to their offspring must meet the following minimum qualifications:

• They must be a married couple.

• Either partner must be a known carrier of X-linked disorder such as hemophilia.

• The husband and wife (donor if applicable) must test negative for HIV and hepatitis B and C.

For Family Balancing

New patients who wish to participate in the program for the purpose of family balancing must meet the following minimum qualifications:

• They must be a married couple.

• The couple must already have at least one child.

• The couple will sort for the less represented sex of children in the family.

• The wife (donor if applicable) is 18 to 39 years of age.

• The husband and wife (donor if applicable) must test negative for HIV and hepatitis B and C.
