A vasogram is a special x-ray study of the vas deferens. Recall that the vas deferen-tia are sperm ducts. They transport the mature sperm from the epididymis to the pelvic cavity and eventually into the ejaculatory ducts.

Your fertility specialist may recommend a vasogram if a blockage along the male reproductive tract is suspected. Even if an obstruction has already been diagnosed by another method, a vasogram can still be useful. That's because a vasogram can pinpoint the exact location of the blockage and assist in corrective surgery.

For the procedure itself, the doctor cuts a small incision into the scrotum and exposes the vas deferens. A special contrast dye is then injected into the vas defer-ens and x-rays are taken. The procedure is considered safe, quick, and relatively pain free. It is performed in the x-ray department of a clinic or hospital. In almost all cases, you can go home immediately following the procedure.
