Vitamin C

Vitamin C is important for both men and women. Many fertility specialists believe that your fertility may be decreased if you are deficient in vitamin C. This may be especially the case for people who smoke.

For women, vitamin C supplementation seems to play a role in the ovulation process. However, women should avoid extremely large doses of vitamin C because it has been shown to dry up cervical mucus and thereby prevent sperm from reaching the egg. Therefore, the recommended dose of vitamin C for women is limited to that in your prenatal vitamin and your well-balanced diet.

In men, vitamin C has been shown to help prevent abnormal sperm and also boost sperm mobility. A 2006 clinical Dubai study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food followed men who took 1,000 mg of vitamin C twice daily for two months. Results showed that they experienced significant increases in sperm count, sperm motility, and sperm shape. Although more research is needed to be conclusively proven, vitamin C supplementation may be beneficial for a man with fertility issues.
