24-h incubation period as recovered at the beginning of the incubation (Figure 14.4). In contrast, untreated samples showed a decrease in Pi concentration from 13.6 to 6.0 Mg ml-1. The data indicate that the majority of the Pi initially present in the activated sludge as well as that produced during the 24-h incubation is converted to poly-P or organic-P by the active microbial populations present in the activated sludge. These results suggest that more Pi is being incorporated into microbial biomass in the form of poly-P and organic-P than is accounted for by the net loss of Pi from the system.

The difference is likely due to the release of "new" Pi from the detrital organic-P pool by PO4ase exoenzymes.
