Breakfast Cereal Packaging

The forerunner of today's RTE cereal packaging was introduced about 1900 by Nabisco in packaging the Uneeda Biscuit. For the consumer, a folding carton with an internal liner became a convenient alternative to cracker-barreltype bulk packaging. Although today's packaging resembles that of the early 1900s, technological changes have occurred in packaging materials and equipment as a result of more demanding product specifications, consumer needs, distribution, merchandising, and regulatory and production requirements.

The major functions of the RTE cereal package are containment, preservation, identification, and integrity. Most RTE cereal packaging systems comprise three components: primary (liner), secondary (folding carton), and tertiary (corrugated shipping container).
