Food Intoxications

Chemical intoxications are usually the result of accidents. People have been poisoned by inorganic compounds such as antimony, arsenic, cyanide, cadmium, lead, selenium, and mercury. The symptoms usually occur rapidly (a few minutes or hours), and reactions are usually violent in cases of ingestion of large doses of the toxic compounds. Immediate medical assistance is essential for the victims in such cases.

Long-term chemical intoxication is also possible by the ingestion of a small amount of toxins in food or water over many years and later the person became ill. There are also many naturally occurring chemical toxins in foods as well as unintentionally added chemical toxins such as pesticides and chemical residuals from packaging materials and the environment.
