Of some importance is the fact that unlike most nations, where the bulk of the animals produced in aquaculture are used directly as human food, a considerable portion of U.S. aquaculture is associated with the production of bait minnows and ornamental fish. In 1997, aquaculture sales of tropical fish in the state of Florida were $57 million. Aquatic plant sales for species used in wetland restoration and aquaria netted an additional $13.2 million (7). The total value of U.S. aquaculture produce in 1996 was slightly more than $735 million (6).
