Major Breeds

Standardization of goose breeds has been ongoing since the late 1880s. The breed standards were set by poultry organizations whose members were concerned more with the "fancy" breeds (ie, breeding for show and competition) than with economic traits. Some standard breeds are Toulouse, the famous goose of France, and the blue-eyed German breed, Embden. Commercially raised meat geese in Europe are Rhenish and White Italians. The breeds used for the production of fatty livers, or foie gras, are Toulouse and Landaise. Both Rhenish and White Italians are white feathered, while Toulouse and Landaise are gray. A popular breed in China is Huoyan.
