Regulatory control of the food industry in Australia is in the hands of the six states and two territories, each of which has a pure food act or an equivalent and accompanying regulations. Substantial uniformity in these regulations has been achieved through the Australian Food Standards Committee administered by the Bureau of Consumer Affairs in the federal attorney-general's department (18). The Food Standards Committee recognizes a commitment to harmonize Australian standards as far as possible with the international standards of the Codex Ali-mentarius Commission.
