Distinct from configuration is molecular conformation, the spatial arrangement of substituent groups that, without breaking any bonds, are free to assume different positions in space because of the freedom of rotation about single bonds. In the simple hydrocarbon ethane, for example, there is nearly complete freedom of rotation around the C—C bond. Many different, interconvertible conformations of ethane are possible, depending on the degree of rotation (Fig. 1-21).
